Katie Barton, Life Coach
Hi, I’m Katie Barton, a life coach who’s intention is to help anyone who wants to freely express their authentic Self but feels trapped by their life struggles. I wholeheartedly believe that every individual knows how to heal themselves from even their most debilitating struggles but were never taught how. That’s because our society has placed so much emphasis on “fixing”, which automatically implies that a person is broken. However, from my perspective, no one needs to be fixed because no one is broken. Instead, they need to heal. Let me explain: Two years ago, I quit the teaching profession and went looking for a more authentic life. Little did I realize that in order to and that life, I needed to start talking about all the parts of me that I had been hiding and denying for decades. When I started to talk about those parts, our health care profession labeled me as “mentally ill”. The doctors told me to take medication and go to therapy because I was very broken and needed to be “fixed”. So I did as they advised.
I popped antidepressants like candy and was labeled, “anxious”, “clinically depressed”, “dissociated from the body”, and “traumatized”. Society’s version of “fixing” me seemed relieving at first. I felt as if I could understand myself better. But, after a while, those pills and labels started to suffocate me. On the outside, I couldn’t leave my house. I constantly worried what other people thought about me. I held no personal boundaries. I felt so alone. However, on the inside, I knew that I was meant to do so much more. I knew I had a purpose but those labels were blocking it from coming through.
So, I did the only thing I could think of: I rewrote the script. I became curious and started asking myself what I needed to do in order to truly heal. I knew that the belief that I was broken was only causing me more suffering. So, I decided to investigate life through a lens of wholeness. By looking through that lens, I learned that my illnesses were coping mechanisms that were not “wrong” or “bad” but were simply trying to tell me that they wanted to be swapped for better ones, which I did by listening to myself and following through on what I was guided to do. In the end, my body released the “mental illness” I had been carrying for so long and I am the happiest I have ever been.
Going through this journey allowed me to create a system that teaches, not only myself but others, how to listen to their life struggles, instead of fear them. As a result of my system, I have learned how to love and trust myself. I have learned my worth and what I value most in life. Through all of those lessons, I finally learned my purpose and it is to help guide individuals back to their wholeness. I don’t work for the health care profession. I don’t want to fix you. I want to help you remember the You that you’ve forgotten.
